December 29, 2014

actually... not so mass. They don't have a scanner here, and my camera is dead. the best I can say, Is that CHRISTMAS IS AWESOME! Lots of food, I made pasta too! Olive oil is super expensive, but it was worth it. Also, Suprisingly, we got more appointments in on Christmas eve, than on any other day my whole mission! It was great hearing your voice, but 20 minutes isn't enough! but what I gain from sacrificing Mom, Dad, Grandparents, siblings, cousins, and a dog is pretty awesome! have a good week! ingat!

12-22-2014

Isn't it amazing, that a little Baby, born in a city, packed to the brim made such big waves, considering He slept in a feeding trough?
Isn't it amazing a 14 year old boy no one had ever heard of before changed to world?
Isn't is amazing a 22 year old boy can learn 2 new languages in just a year, and someday change the lives of generations brought unto Christ?
Isn't it amazing, that Father knows your name, where you are, and has a plan for you too? you can change the world, if only just 1 degree right now, in a hundred years think of how many people will know your name!
Love you all! this is my Christmas testimony;
Christ lives! He has restored His gospel! He will come again!
sa sacradong pangalan Niya, si Jesucristo, Amen.

update: Our mission president has a copy of Ephraim's rescue, and he is letting our zone leaders borrow it! which means, I get to show off aunt Lizzy to ALL THE OTHER MISSIONARIES! she is gonna be famous here in the Philippines! haha. actually she might already be. "wait so that actress is your aunt? I saw her name in the credits, it's Christensen isn't it?" how did he remember that?! oh well, she's famous now haha! ingat!

Mom's Christmas Present to Andrew

Andrew gave me permission to share my present to him for this Christmas. Merry Christmas and may you feel His love now and forever.

Dear Andrew,

I told you that I had a thought for a gift. My doubts and fears almost prevented me from doing it. I do know though that this is a good thing I choose to do. My mind tells me that you will be disappointed and maybe feel a tad unloved. My spirit assures me that the space you are in at this time is one that will sense and love this more than anything else I could do for you this year. May you know that my love for you is ever so strong. I miss you so much and yet I am so glad you are where you are!

The idea that came to me was to write one or two letters to the investigators. My gift to you is something you can share this holiday season as you serve the Lord.  Of course a copy is also for you. Wow if I can do this. There is a lot of emotion tied to this.

My love to you,
Mom

His response:

This is a beautiful gift! I am not sure all my investigators can speak english well enough, but I will for sure give this to the Imbat family! also, I would encourage you to post this on the blog, a testimony is only important if we can share it! I love you, And I know the Lord will bless you for your willingness to be a missionary. I have one request though. I would hope you (take out the mother part) and send it to an investigator, or a friend of yours where you live!
Just remember, Sharing increases the value of any gift de ba?
well I love you! I'm trying to decicede what to send you here on my end. INgat!

There are three letters. For him they were attached in pdf format. I will copy and paste them here. Sorry if it gets a little long. :D

Letter 1

Greetings from America!

My name is Michele Lewis and I am the mother of Elder Cook. As Christmas approaches it is my desire to share my testimony with you through my son just as Heavenly Father shares His love through His son.

Many years ago as you probably already know there was a decree to tax a beautiful little family. Mary was expecting to birth the son of God. They had to travel. Can you imagine traveling on a donkey in such a state? Maybe in your culture that is easier to imagine than it is in mine.

Her time to deliver came. There were so many people gone to Bethlehem that there was hardly room to walk let alone find a private place for the baby to be born. The innkeepers were sending many away and a new baby to be born made the challenge even more difficult.

One innkeeper took pity on the dear family. He may have had a wife and children of his own and couldn't bare the thought of a baby people born on the crowded streets or he may have just been touched by the spirit of God. He offered his stable. There the young mother gave birth to the greatest gift the world has ever known.

He was called wonderful, counselor, the mighty God, the prince of peace. He was our Savior Jesus Christ. At Christmas we love to celebrate. I don't know the customs of your country. In my country there is Christmas music every where as early as October. Decorations before November are being sold to prepare for the holiday. The focus seems to be on presents and Santa Claus. This is a fun aspect of Christmas. Sometimes we forget though to really enjoy the true meaning of the holiday. We are supposed to be celebrating the birth of the Savior to the world.

My testimony to you as that he was really born in that stable. That he really did live and grow. That he really did teach as the New Testament describes. That he suffered in the garden of Gethsemane for all of us. That he took upon him not only all of our sins but also he took our pains and burdens. He took our ever experience as his own and then did what no other man nor woman could do. He atoned for us. He was perfect. Without flaw. He never spoke guile. He never did wrong. He kept full control of his anger. Even when he showed it for the Lord it was controlled and led by God. He did it all for us and the Love of His father, our Father.

Because of Him we are able to fully enter the presence of God. We would not be able to do so in our fallen state. The mere act of being mortal brings things that cannot exist in the presence of God. Yet we can have that hope of returning.

There are many great churches in the world today. They teach us to love God and to love others. They don't, however, believe in a living prophets today There is an idea that revelation has died. How though can anyone who has ever just know what to do for another doubt that there is still revelation and guidance from above?

I testify that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is such a church that believes in modern revelation and guidance through prophets seers and revelators. That the Holy Ghost, a gift received after baptism, can easily guide us each day. It takes the beautiful promptings we often have and magnifies them from a once in a while thing to a daily thing. That the Savior lives and love each of us. That families can be sealed together forever. All because of the love of a child born in a manger many years ago to come humbly, to serve humbly, to die humbly that we might live.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Letter 2

Greetings from America!

I am Michele Lewis, the mother of Elder Cook. As a part of this holiday season I bear my testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. May you feel His spirit this year on Christmas.

There was another event that happened in December. This event was the birth of a different baby. December 23, 1805. This child was raised in a area of America that had many churches. They all wanted him to join. They all spoke of the bible and yet their words were often so different. One might that say you could only be saved by announcing I am saved. Another might say there is no salvation for we are all sinners. Still throes would say other things. This left the young boy of 14 with many questions. If they were all using the bible, then how come they were so different?

This boy full of so many questions began to study the bible on his own. He had so many questions. He'd talk to his parents. His mom would go to one church and his dad would join himself to no church. He is dad had a testimony of God but had found no sense of home among any of the churches. This boy was Joseph Smith. He came across this scripture:
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom , let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Upon reading this he decided to try it out. He would ask God. He made preparations. He knew that this was not just a little task of kneeling in his bedroom with his siblings to watch and hear. No this was important and needed to be carried out with care. He went to a grove of trees out away from everyone. There he knelt and began to pray.

He was overcome with the darkness of the devil. He could not speak and he became very afraid. His heart continued to pray. He begged for release and soon it was that he darkness could not be there any more for the Light was so great. Two beings and a glorious feeling of peace came upon him. This was God, the Father and His son Jesus Christ.

This beautiful experience is known as the First vision, for Joseph had many chances to talk with the Savior after this first vision. In that vision he learned that none of the churches were complete. Joseph was to join none. He'd be prepared to bring forth the restoration of the true and living gospel. He'd  restore priesthood powers to the earth. He'd restore a belief in eternal life and families being sealed together forever.

Nearly 200 years later this restored gospel has spread throughout the world. We send missionaries to share the love and hope promised in the gospel. We let our loved ones leave us with only written contact and a couple of phone calls for 18 to 24 months. Any parent, especially a mother, can think about how hard this must be. To allow a child, who may be your best friend, to travel to the other side of the world. To learn languages he would never hear otherwise. To meet beautiful people and share the love of the Lord with them.

I know the gospel is true. I know that Joseph Smith received answer to his prayers and that you too can receive such answers. That you too can kneel with sincere questions and receive. Not just about the gospels truth, you can receive answers for all that is weighing on your mind or heart.

I know that the Savior suffered in the garden of Gethsemane and died on a cross for us. I know that he was resurrected that we too can be reunited with God. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and that we are lead today by a prophet. The gospel is restored

May you feel His spirit. May you seek His blessings. May you remember to pray in all you do.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen

Letter 3

Greetings from America!

My name is Michele Lewis and I am the mother of the elder who gave this to you. Elder Cook is truly blessed to have the opportunity to meet you and share messages from the Lord with you. Merry Christmas! It is a time of great joy as we turn our thoughts to the birth of the Savior of the world.

I want to share my testimony. After the Savior suffered in the garden for us he was crucified. He returned to our Father in Heaven. He was resurrected and his ministry on earth was not yet finished. In the Book of Mormon there are accounts of some of His ministries.

You can read in 3 Nephi of how he appeared to the people of the Americas. He visited and shared the gospel with the people of that land. Reminding us that He loves all of His children no matter where in the world they are.

I love the Book of Mormon. It was written about a people that lived a long time ago. They escaped Jerusalem and traveled to a new world. They were guided to the new world. Here they grew families and experienced life. They had wars and they had peace. They had prophets to guide them and experienced the ups and downs that we know of life ourselves.

They of course saw the Savior and lived in peace for many years and generations following His coming to them. They felt his spirit of truth in the words they were taught as generation after generation was born. They experienced a forgetting of that love and a return to a war like state. In the end, the book was buried and later found in the early 1800s as Joseph Smith was led to them during his desire to know the whole truth of the gospel of Christ.

Moroni gives a beautiful promise at the end of the book. A promise that allows us to know for ourselves if the book is true. In Moroni 10:3-5 he says:
3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder them in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things
For me there is a spirit that I can feel from the pages. I read the bible, and it is a good book, there are times when the spirit speaks strong to me. The spirit that I feel from the Book of Mormon is a constant spirit of love. To read it with an open heart allowing it to sit within for a bit is beautiful. I hope you too read this book. I hope that you will feel the spirit within. I hope that you will ask if it is true.

Is it really from God? Yes, it is. Is it really an account of a people long ago? Yes, it is. Was it really translated by a poor farmer boy? Yes, it was. You know that the spirit of the Lord can speak to any of any rank or power. You know that money and status do not dictate whether the Lord's spirit speaks to you. I believe you have felt His spirit. You know that it can be given freely to all mankind no matter where or who they are.

Through a testimony of the Book of Mormon and baptism you can receive a gift that will bring that spirit into a constant and more focused existence.

I leave my testimony that He, the Savior of the world, lives. That He died for us. That He came again so that we too might live again. That He visited other people and left another testament of His great love for us. That His spirit lives in the Book of Mormon and you too can have that with you at all times and in all places. I testify that you are a beloved child of God. He has been waiting for you and He has sent these missionaries to you for a reason.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

11-24-2014

odd experience, we were going to email at 1, but the second I touched the computer, the power went out, I guess I just static shocked the entire city's power grid? maybe, Father wanted a delay til 2 for some reason :D

I am forwarding my Grandma's talk, because with my one year mark coming up next month, it is a great summary of my mission thus far! enjoy!

I am excited to be a missionary grandma.  We have three grandchildren out at the moment.  We were privileged to have Andrew live with us for a few months before he left; so he actually is serving from this ward.   I chose to give this talk by using excerpts from his letters.  He left the middle of January and has been serving for about 11 months.

January 20
The MTC is about the hardest thing I have ever done.  I think about having six weeks to learn Tagalog and start crying.  But then I look back at the last four days and how much I have learned and realize:  I learned more in four days than in my years of French study at school.  The gift of tongues is real.

I am so proud to be an Elder in a district of all Elders.  Only two people get called Elder – general authorities and missionaries, and as Elder Bednar says, “Apostles with a big A and apostles with a little a.”

February 10
Every time the class has a question, the teacher says, “Pick a chapter, first thing that comes to mind.”  Without fail the chapter is always exactly what we need to hear.  I have begun memorizing scriptures in Tagalog.  Three in three days.  It’s actually easier than memorizing in English, and I know what I’m memorizing now.  It’s amazing to me that I can have conversations with native Tagalog speakers after only four weeks.  It’s a beautiful language.

March 10
I am extending the invitation to you to real Page 121 of Preach My Gospel.  It is a quote from President Ezra Taft Benson, and I have a testimony of how true it is. “I have often said one of the greatest secrets of missionary work is work!  If a missionary works, he will get the Spirit; if he gets the Spirit, he will teach by the Spirit; and if he teaches by the Spirit, he will touch the hearts of the people, and he will be happy.  There will be no homesickness, no worrying about families, for all time and talents and interests are centered on the work of the ministry.  Work, work, work – there is no satisfactory substitute, especially in missionary work.”  I am not homesick because of that quote.  It is amazing to see how quickly the Spirit can change the lives of families, and when they are truly converted, it is beautiful to see their countenance.

April 21
I seriously enjoy Elder Bednar.  In conference he is a caged tiger, but in the MTC talks he is let loose.  It is worth looking up The Character of Christ and any other MTC talk you can get your hands on.

April 28
I have read Jacob through Mosiah this week, some of my favorite verses.  The feeling I get when I read makes all of life worth it.  Even if I can’t feel this way 24/7, it is beautiful for that one hour of personal study every day!

May 19
I have learned some really great things in PMG.  First, "People won’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care." Advice from Elder Holland. We applied this to our less active family, AND IT WORKED!

And the next thing I learned.  A man went fishing.  He left at 6:30 am and returned at 8 pm.  He caught one fish.

Another man went fishing at 6:30 am and returned at 8 pm, but he caught 12 fish!

What's the difference here? The first fisherman left on time, but spent many hours traveling. He stopped for breakfast and stopped for lunch, snack and dinner. Altogether, he spent 2 hours with his hook in the water.  The second fisherman packed a lunch the night before, woke up early for breakfast, and ate after he came home.  With traveling he spent 12 HOURS with his hook in the water.

I have really seen the juxtaposition of a very successful transfer and a very minimally successful transfer. I will hold on to this lesson!

May 26
Moroni 10:32 has answered a question of mine.  HOW do we follow God’s commandments, when we have so many bad influences?  This scripture was given me by the Bishop’s niece who is preparing to serve a mission.  It is a perfect scripture to bring back advice given me … before leaving, quoting President Uchtdorf.  “JUST STOP”.  Any time you have temptation, just deny it.  It’s easier than you think.

The number one problem in the Philippines (as far as the church is concerned) is not following through with commitments. They don't understand how important it is to actually keep the commandments, not just say they have faith and that is enough.  So we stress how faith is a foundation, but not the building. Faith is the first principal, in the gospel of Jesus Christ, but then we have repentance, baptism, the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end, which may just be the most important.

June 30
I’ll start with transfers.  I went with Elder Christensen, the one from Bountiful.  After spending the whole day with him, I still don’t know anything about him.  This is a fantastic thing, though!  We didn’t have time to talk between appointments.  We were running to the next one!  We got five lessons in three hours, which is better than my average for a whole day! … This is what I always imagined missionary work would be like.  Rushing from appointment to appointment, saying hello to absolutely everyone along the way, all the children love you, and most important, teaching with power, and feeling something beautiful in the lessons.

July 14
“Why are many called, but few are chosen?”  We were discussing the Baptismal Covenant in Church, when Elder Masame of Australia told us a stranger on a bus asked him this question.  The simplest explanation is that often the Lord would have gathered Israel as a hen gathereth her chicks.  This is the calling.  The choosing part is the answer.  The Elect are those who keep commitments and covenants.

August 11
Good and evil are so obvious here.  As President Holland said, “A mission is the most real your life will EVER get.”

September 28
I wanted to share a portion of my letter to my mission president, President Balledos. “I have learned a lot about humility and leadership this past week.  What I learned I was lacking was love.  Sometime along my mission, I realized that I stopped loving other missionaries who were disobedient.  I am no better than them though, and I want to recognize not only what good they DO accomplish, but also the divine potential they have to do even more good, even if they are not fulfilling that potential yet.  Compliments do what criticizing cannot, and this is encourage progression.  When you chastise, it must only be when moved upon by the Spirit, and you must show an increase of LOVE.

I don’t know why I stopped loving people, but I have made a commitment to increase in Christ-like love.

[Then I added my own comments that our children have served missions, Dave and I have served a mission, and we have grandchildren that served missions.  All of us have been blessed by serving those missions.  And our families have been blessed by missionary service as well.  I then concluded with your testimony written January 27 while you were in the MTC.]

I know that God loves me and called me on a mission.  I know that my family and friends will be blessed through my service in ways we can’t anticipate.  I know that I was called by God through a living prophet, and that he called us one by one just as the Lord touched the stones for Jared.  I know that the atonement is real, and all you have to do is accept it and repent, and all your sorrows will be eased.  Although the people rejected the prophets in ancient times, and our Father took his authority back to preserve it, I know that the gospel has been restored through a prophet and that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and has ALL the answers to ANY question. … sa pangilan ni Jesucristo, Amen.

"Placed around the world, temples have their own unique look and design on the outside, but inside they all contain the same eternal light, purpose, and truth. In 1 Corinthians 3:16 we read, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” We too … have been placed all around the world, like temples, and we each have our own unique look and outward design, like temples. We also have a spiritual light within us, like temples. This spiritual light is a reflection of the Savior’s light. Others will be attracted to this brightness."

I also have been studying how to use a white board effectively in teaching. It turned out to be very helpful in one lesson, with a pretty thick language barrier. I drew a seed and labeled it faith, then drew a sapling, and finally a full tree. When I tried to explain it, he had no clue what I was saying! but when I drew the pictures, it made all the difference! I just used a notebook then, but I found a small whiteboard today, that fits in my bag :D

Mass Emails parts 2 and 3

Part 2:

I for got the very important part, where I sand bagged the house of my most progressing investigator. We taught him the Law of Chastity, and He demonstrated flirting, by grabbing my hand, clicking twice, wolf whistling and doing the eyebrow thing. It was way funny because he's like 90.

I forgot!  I heard my first Christmas song 9-11, and the most recent 9-19 considering Christmas starts in September here, and I don't have a radio, I imagine there is a lot more, sooooo: Maligayang Pasko!

9-8-2014

dear everyone. I ran out of time last night to write. I DO have an excellent story to tell though. I have a close friend going through a hard time, I fasted to know what I can say to all of you to help with anything going on in your life. I hope this story helps:
for 4 days we did not get a water delivery. my personal water filter decided to go bad at this time as well, The first day was not so bad, because we had a little left over water. We were all using one filter between us, and the water still tasted funny, so we didn't trust it too much. we were getting about half as much water as we need. one sister just got back from the hospital with kidney stones, so no one wanted to drink soda. finally, we decided to switch delivery men, but when we text-ed them, we got no reply. we finally found someone and we were so happy. The day after was fast Sunday  I believe I have described in the past how hard fasting can be... It is hot and it is humid, and we sweat about 2 liters a day, not to mention what we urinate! Saturday, at the last meal, I downed four and a half liters  to prepare myself. But you lose a lot of water sleeping, so come time to close, we were all close to exhaustion. dehydration makes you drowsy by the way.

I had prepared a liter of water in the refrigerator for just this occasion! I opened the bottle, put that beautiful chill to my lips, and felt the most refreshing feeling I have had in recent memory! As I was thus pondering, What can I say? A distant memory came to mind "When was the last time you appreciated water?" For those of you I have shared that sentence with in the past, you know that this is an important key phrase for me. It represents gratitude for everything you are blessed with, and as such, giving everything you have got to Christ. "When you sweep your kitchen, sweep unto the Lord!" Everything we do can be for our learning, and His glory, if we do it with an eye single to the Lord.  so I'll ask again: "when was the last time you appreciated water?"

Here is a recording of Andrew singing. This link is for a download.

I did NOT get a third companion. I know that President wont take the advice of a missionary who is not involved, but will follow the decision he is inspired to by the Lord. He is an inspired man :D

Anything to save 60 pisos right?
MAN! with my new companion the spirit is SOOO STRONG in our lessons! it's like I'm back in the MTC or with my first companion again! Now I hope that I can keep my lessons like this for the next 18 months! I am now officially serving a sister's mission haha!
